Regardless of the type of work shops do, most find it necessary to have CAD capabilities as well as CAM. Even if a shop receives all its work electronically as CAD files, the programmer often needs to clean up the geometry in order to create the tool paths properly.

Basic functions such as point, line, arc, fillet, spline, chamfer and rectangle creation are essential for creating or modifying any type of geometry. More advanced CAD capabilities, such as surface creation and manipulation, allow you to create complex models from scratch, or to modify existing models to make them machinable. In addition to geometry creation, a good CAD provides features to speed part modeling, such as multiple viewports and construction planes.

Many systems give you the ability to graphically edit the tool path after it has been generated. This not only gives you final say over exactly what the tool path does, but also gives you the ability to cut, paste, reverse or reorder sections without taking the time to recreate the entire tool path. This also applies to machining parameters such as feeds and speeds. It is important that you are able to change these settings without recreating your entire tool path.
